It occurred to him that not only had he lost track of the number of drinks he’d consumed, he also had no idea how long he’d been sitting at the bar. Not that it mattered because he was prepared to sit and wait however long it took. Lisele had to show up sometime, and he planned to be here when she did. He also realised that what he’d planned to say to her when she finally put in an appearance had disappeared, along with his drinks and the time. Get it together, he warned himself. Lisele owed him an explanation, and since she wouldn’t respond to voice mails or texts, he had to stake out the club where she worked, Peace Oasis. Maybe tonight he’d finally get some answers as to why she broke off their engagement. Thomas took a huge gulp of the fresh drink in front of him and wondered if anyone else’s engagement had ever been cancelled with the curt text message, ‘Engmnt off. Sry. Fnd sm1 els’. She couldn’t even be bothered to type out a full sentence or use real words. Lisele had always been flaky, but she’d never completely blown him off like this. Did she find someone else or was she telling him to find someone else? After knowing each other since childhood, with their families’ ties going back even further, surely Lisele owed him a more complete explanation for ending their engagement. Text message shorthand was fine for a missed dinner date—not for breaking up with someone you’ve known almost your entire life. Damn it, everything had been going to plan until now. He’d just been promoted to vice president at the bank, three years after receiving his MBA. He and Lisele were supposed to make their engagement official later this year, and get married a few months after. The children would follow in another year or two, around which time he would be up for executive vice president at the bank. First Philadelphia United Federal put a great deal of emphasis on the family life of its senior-level executives, and Thomas had every intention of maintaining that tradition. Okay, he and Lisele hadn’t spent a lot of time together lately, but he’d told her that long hours were a part of his job, and he’d emphasised how much their marriage meant to his career. How could she back out on him like this? When Lisele arrived, he’d get to the bottom of what was going on and get things back on track.
