Despite the natural barrier of the Alps, which Musset described as nature's way of protecting Italy, these passes have historically been crucial communication routes between Italy and the rest of Europe. Thus, traveling through Piedmont was almost essential for foreign travelers, especially those from England, France, and Spain. Despite its importance as an entryway to Italy, Piedmont seems to have been considered of little significance in the writings and thoughts of travelers. This might be because the region was not regarded as a true part of Italy or because the greatest intellectuals, such as poets, artists, and thinkers, were eager to reach the main centers of Italian art, culture, and history.
