In Alcott’s Pauline’s Passion and Punishment, the main character, Pauline, receives a letter from Gilbert: he tells her he does not love her anymore, therefore he cannot marry her. Pauline’s heart is turned to stone, she wants revenge and she will never love again. His friend Manuel, who loves her and would do anything for her, tries to help Pauline but power, wealth, fame is all that she wants. She wants to show Gilbert what he has lost and she promises to marry Manuel if he will help her. Later Pauline and Gilbert, accompanied by his wife, meet. Pauline is no longer what she was before but Gilbert realizes that he loves her and want her back at all costs.
