Affermato cantante rock (soprannominato «The King»), simbolo della prima generazione di giovani ribelli e anticonformisti, approda al cinema sull'onda dell'enorme successo popolare e del fanatismo che circonda la sua figura. Occhi azzurri, fascino introverso, è il protagonista di numerose pellicole, tutte costruite sui suoi successi discografici: dal romantico Fratelli rivali (1956) di R. Webb al drammatico Il delinquente del Rock'n Roll (1957) di R. Thorpe, forse la sua migliore interpretazione, dall'ottimistico La via del male (1958) di M. Curtiz al melodrammatico Stella di fuoco (1961) di D. Siegel.
