Compositore statunitense. Figlio di un maestro di banda aperto a molteplici interessi, ebbe da lui la prima formazione musicale. Fu poi allievo a Yale di H. Parker; ma già nel rapporto con questo insegnante I. si rese conto della difficoltà di conciliare la propria concezione spregiudicatamente sperimentale con il clima della vita musicale americana (dominato da un accademismo che faceva esclusivamente riferimento ai modelli ottocenteschi europei, soprattutto tedeschi. I. rinunciò a fare della musica la propria professione (fu solo organista in una chiesa di Bloomfield dal 1898 al 1900 e poi di New York fino al 1902) e si diede con successo all'attività di assicuratore, mantenendo a lungo una vera e propria «doppia vita» per comporre in tutti i momenti liberi. Si ritirò dagli affari all'inizio...
