Junia Wickline has worked the night switchboard in Cinder Fork for twenty-two years. At one minute past midnight, the manual exchange is cut over to direct dial, the board goes dark, and nine years of the town's telephone records go onto a truck to be pulped. After that, no call made in Cinder Fork will have existed at all. Above the town, forty acres of black water sit behind an earthen dam nobody has inspected since 1972. Below it, four rows of company houses draw their water from a well that was drilled in 1949. And in a hollow where eleven hundred people know everything about each other, there is one name that has not been said out loud in eleven years.
