Some Secrets Die with Their Keepers. Others Are Designed to Survive. There are secrets that can destroy careers, secrets that can bring down institutions, and secrets that can make the person carrying them dangerous to someone else. Imagine sitting alone at night, staring at a collection of files that could change everything: documents connecting powerful people, photographs appearing to contradict an official story, recordings capturing something nobody was supposed to hear, financial records revealing hidden transactions, scientific data challenging established interests, or testimony from someone who knows what happened behind closed doors. You know the information matters, but you also understand something far more frightening: once you possess it, you may become part of the story. What happens if you disappear, are killed, imprisoned, threatened, coerced, incapacitated, or simply become unable to communicate? What happens to the truth when the person carrying it is gone? The switch may preserve the message, but it cannot decide what the message means. The book then enters the rapidly changing world of information preservation. Physical repositories, digital archives, encrypted storage, cloud systems, offline backups, distributed custody, delayed communications, blockchain networks, smart contracts, automated triggers, and artificial intelligence all offer different possibilities for making information survive. Yet every technology introduces vulnerabilities of its own. A forgotten password can destroy an archive, a corrupted file can erase critical evidence, a compromised account can expose information prematurely, and a false trigger can release material at precisely the wrong moment. Even a system that functions exactly as designed can produce disastrous results if the assumptions behind its design were flawed. And then there is the most difficult question of all: what if the information is genuine, but releasing it causes harm? A dead man's switch might contain evidence of wrongdoing alongside private information about innocent people. It might contain classified material, trade secrets, confidential communications, personal records, or evidence connected to an ongoing investigation. The fact that information is important does not automatically mean that immediate public disclosure is responsible or lawful. Dead Man's Switch therefore examines the difficult boundary between whistleblowing and unlawful disclosure, public interest and privacy, legitimate secrecy and institutional concealment, and evidence-based investigation and unsupported accusation. Ultimately, Dead Man's Switch is not simply a book about secret files, technological safeguards, or people who fear being silenced. It is an investigation into what happens when knowledge becomes inseparable from personal risk, when evidence must outlive its creator, and when the future may inherit information whose original keeper is no longer available to explain it. It explores the possibility that information can be protected beyond the lifespan of an individual while insisting that preservation must remain connected to verification, law, ethics, and responsible human judgment. The goal is not to assume that every mysterious death conceals a conspiracy or that every person claiming to possess dangerous information is telling the truth. The goal is to understand how evidence can survive, how claims can be tested, and how the truth might be given an opportunity to emerge even after the person who carried it has disappeared. Because sometimes the person can be silenced, but the evidence does not have to disappear.
