"Make better choices." "Avoid failure." "Learn from successful people." There are plenty of books and advice about avoiding failure and unexpected shocks. But in real life, shocks still arrive. Evidence Is Not a Guarantee does not promise a life without them. Instead, it asks what to look at and how to judge when the shock cannot be avoided, so we may be less shaken by what we could not prevent. Should I stay, or is it time to move? Should I protect stability, or take a chance? How far should I trust and cooperate with this person? What should I refuse, and how much distance do I need? AI is changing work. People switch jobs, retrain, lose jobs, consider starting businesses, and make major choices under pressure from living costs and an uncertain economy. Later in life, retirement can force a new question: what comes after the role that defined so much of everyday life? It is harder to assume that following someone else's path will lead to the same future. So we look to experience, numbers, experts, and people who have succeeded before us. All of them can provide valuable evidence. But evidence is not a guarantee. A method that worked before may not work the same way again. A path that was right for someone else may not be right for you. Even careful judgment can lead somewhere unexpected. Evidence Is Not a Guarantee does not offer a formula for success or tell you which kind of life is more admirable. Instead, it asks four questions before you choose: What do I know? What am I expecting? What do I want? And how does this choice connect to the direction I actually want to go? These questions are not only about work and money. In relationships, we use past behavior as evidence, predict what may happen next, and decide how far to trust, cooperate, refuse, or step back. When we have pursued a goal for a long time, we can also ask what problem that goal was originally meant to solve. A bad outcome does not automatically mean the judgment was foolish. A good outcome does not automatically prove it was sound. When anxiety, dissatisfaction, disappointment, or an unexpected shock arrives, one question can come before the verdict: Why? Why am I anxious? Why is this person hard to trust? Why do I want to leave? Why do I want to keep going? What changed? When a shock arrives, look again at what changed. Separate the evidence in front of you from the expectations attached to it. Before accepting someone else's certainty as your answer, leave room to return to a choice that is your own. Am I moving in the direction I actually want?
