This book aims to provide a comprehensive yet accessible understanding of what is commonly known as Hinduism, drawing upon the rich tapestry of its foundational texts and traditions. It is important to note from the outset that the term "Hinduism" itself is not found within the oldest scriptural traditions, such as the Vedas. Rather, this term was likely applied by outsiders to describe the diverse array of spiritual and cultural practices originating in what is today known as India. What is often referred to as Hinduism is more accurately understood as sanatana-dharma, which translates to the eternal occupation or the eternal way of living. According to Vedic philosophy, this sanatana-dharma is the essential characteristic of the spirit soul, which is to render service. This inherent tendency to serve manifests in various ways in the material world, whether directed towards our senses, family, or society. However, our original and eternal occupation is to serve the Supreme Lord, known by various names such as Krishna, Rama, or Vishnu. This book delves into the core principles of sanatana-dharma as revealed through the Vedas, considered the original scripture for mankind. We explore key Vedic texts, including the Bhagavad-gita, where Lord Krishna imparts profound wisdom to Arjuna, and the Ramayana, which narrates the exemplary life of Lord Rama. These scriptures offer timeless guidance on the nature of reality, the self, the Supreme Lord, and the path to spiritual fulfillment. We also address the universality of sanatana-dharma, emphasizing that it is not a sectarian faith limited to a particular group or region. The principles of loving service to God and abstaining from sinful activities are applicable to all individuals, regardless of their background or current beliefs. In fact, the practice of devotional service can even enhance one's understanding and practice of other faiths. We aim to illuminate the essential teachings of this ancient tradition, clarifying key concepts such as: The true meaning of dharma beyond just "religion" or "duty". The nature of the soul (atma) and its eternal relationship with the Supreme Soul (Paramatma/Bhagavan/Ishvara). The concept of karma and reincarnation. The significance of bhakti-yoga, the path of devotional service, as the recommended process for spiritual realization in this age. The understanding of the various manifestations of the Supreme Lord and His all-attractive nature. Our goal is to present these profound teachings in a clear and accessible manner, allowing readers to understand the depth and wisdom inherent in the Vedic tradition, which underlies what is commonly known as Hinduism. By exploring the eternal principles of sanatana-dharma, we hope to offer insights into a meaningful and fulfilling way of life for all.
