A vivid nighttime infiltration sequence, a genuine rescue, and a quiet, hard-won conversation between Ruby and her mother give the book both its action and its heart in roughly equal measure. This is a book about the difference between solving a problem quickly and solving it well — about a heroine who has to fail first, on a rooftop, alone, before she can succeed later, surrounded by the people who love her. Ruby's family and friends don't step back to let her be a hero; they insist, again and again, on running beside her, and the book's climax only works because she finally lets them.
