Ruby Flint just wanted an ordinary school excursion. Two hundred kilometres from Stonecliff Bay, a city museum, a dinosaur exhibition, and a permission slip her mother signed weeks ago — the kind of day where the biggest crisis should be whether a classmate's tuna sandwich achieves sentience before lunch. Then her wrist ignites beside a small, plainly labelled fossil case: a raptor claw, "provenance unconfirmed," waiting in an exhibition that happens to be passing through the one city Ruby's school happens to be visiting. Nothing about that is a coincidence. Somewhere behind bars, Silas Vane — the man who once tried to break her grandfather — has been writing careful, coded letters for eight months, all of them circling the same eleven words: the one who runs ahead of her pack always dies first. Ruby's new bond gives her Raptor Form: blinding speed, razor instinct, a body built to solve everything before anyone else has finished asking the question. It feels like an answer to every problem she's ever had. That is exactly the danger. Within a day of the claw waking, Ruby is already sneaking out alone at midnight, certain that fast is the same thing as capable — and nearly caught for it. What follows is a five-day sprint through a city that doesn't know what Ruby is, alongside a visiting curator, Dr. Ines Callahan, whose warmth conceals a patient, unsettling attention to exactly the questions Ruby least wants asked. As the exhibition's closing date is abruptly moved forward, Ruby, her best friends Leo and Mia, her mother Hannah, her grandfather Arthur, and Detective Nora Vale race to reach a sealed vault beneath the museum before Vane's network does — a vault holding more than one fossil claw, and a truth about Ruby's family history that's been waiting far longer than any of them realised. The book delivers everything readers of the series have come to expect: a competent, present adult cast who never sideline Ruby's own agency; a friendship trio in Ruby, Leo, and Mia that has fully come into its own, with Mia in particular proving herself indispensable at exactly the moment it matters most; a genuinely complicated antagonist in Callahan, whose test of Ruby turns out to be more personal — and more revealing of her own compromises — than anyone expects; and a family mystery, centred on Ruby's grandmother Eleanor and the enigmatic "first guardian girl," that deepens the series' mythology without resolving it too neatly. A vivid nighttime infiltration sequence, a genuine rescue, and a quiet, hard-won conversation between Ruby and her mother give the book both its action and its heart in roughly equal measure. This is a book about the difference between solving a problem quickly and solving it well — about a heroine who has to fail first, on a rooftop, alone, before she can succeed later, surrounded by the people who love her. Ruby's family and friends don't step back to let her be a hero; they insist, again and again, on running beside her, and the book's climax only works because she finally lets them. By the end, Ruby hasn't learned to distrust her own speed. She's learned who it's actually for. Ruby Flint and the Raptor Code closes with the arrival of a second, dormant relic in Stonecliff Museum's care — a shield-plate whose lesson, "strength against control," waits patiently for a future book, while Ruby, for now, gets to go home to an ordinary Friday dinner with the people who caught her.
