On a quiet Sunday morning in Chingola, transport driver Lubasi Mwanza steps outside for fresh air and finds a dead man outside his gate. He does not call the police. Not immediately. Because the dead man at his gate is not his problem — but the police arriving to find the dead man at his gate could very quickly become his problem. And so Lubasi Mwanza does what frightened people do: he goes back inside, sits at his window, and waits for someone else to find the body first. No one comes. What Mundia does not know — what no one knows yet — is that Chisomo Mulombwa was also quietly setting up a private copper deal with a Dutch commodities trader, cutting out his own gang without their knowledge, and that this small act of private enterprise had already made him a target from two different directions at once. Into this tightly wound investigation steps Hambulo Mulombwa, the dead man's widow — composed, controlled, and driven by something she is not yet ready to name. When Hambulo finds Lubasi at the burial and writes her number on his wrist, she tells him she is looking for something different from what the police are looking for. What follows is a relationship that grows slowly and carefully across phone calls and afternoon meetings, across the flame trees on Kafue Road and the long evenings on Kabundi Road, even as the investigation circles closer to something neither of them is prepared for. Silent Ground is a murder mystery set against the texture of Copperbelt life — the compounds and the taverns, the illegal mine sites and the transport depots, the community radio phone-ins and the markets where news travels faster than any official channel.
