Time travel is the concept of moving between different points in time—either into the past or the future—rather than experiencing time's normal one-way flow from past to present to future. Core idea In everyday life, we travel through time at a fixed rate of one second per second. Time travel imagines ways to accelerate that rate (into the future) or reverse it (into the past). Scientific basis (briefly) Forward time travel is already real in a limited sense. Einstein's special and general relativity show that time slows down for objects moving near light speed or in strong gravity (time dilation). Astronauts on the International Space Station age a tiny bit slower than people on Earth; extreme versions of this effect would let someone travel far into the future relative to those left behind. Backward time travel remains purely theoretical. Some solutions to Einstein's equations (such as closed timelike curves involving rotating black holes or exotic matter) allow paths that loop back in time, but they raise major problems: causality violations, the grandfather paradox (what happens if you prevent your own birth?), and the need for conditions that may be physically impossible. Cultural side The idea has appeared in myths for centuries and became a staple of modern science fiction after H.G. Wells' The Time Machine (1895). Stories explore its dramatic possibilities—changing history, meeting past versions of yourself, or witnessing distant futures—while physicists continue to debate whether any consistent, paradox-free form of backward time travel could ever exist. In short: forward time travel is allowed by known physics (and happens in small amounts every day); backward time travel is an open, highly constrained theoretical question.
