Apprenticeship Years

At seventeen, I left the mud and hayfields of Northumberland behind to step through the gates of a metal foundry. Armed with nothing but my father's simple rule "If a job's worth doing, it's worth doing right, and do it once" I began my apprenticeship. This is the story of those early years: the punch-clock discipline, the heat and roar of the foundry floor, the pride of making your own tools, and the quiet satisfaction of learning a trade. It's about the friends I made, the practical jokes that taught me humility, and the moment I realized four factory walls would never be enough to hold me. These are the hands that built my world before the quarries called, before the deserts of the Gulf, and long before the rice paddies of Vietnam became my home. Plain, honest, and true this is where it all began.
