A young man Arthur thinks of as the Rule Collector arrives each morning with a laptop full of notes. He believes that if he can map the rules of advancement precisely enough, the outcomes will follow. They do not. Marcus manages the floor with practiced warmth and genuine conviction that he is fair. He is not dishonest. He simply occupies a position that has never required him to see the rules from the outside. Arthur watches. He records. He revises. He crosses out conclusions and tries again. He is not writing to explain the system. He is trying to confirm that he is not imagining it. In the process, he is forced to confront the possibility he has avoided: he was not only shaped by the system. He participated in it. Arthur's Working Notes is a novella in the tradition of Animal Farm—fiction as structural argument. Set in a Midwestern diner during a long winter, it examines what happens when ordinary people move through systems none of them designed, and the distance between understanding something and being able to change it.
