Compositore e pianista ungherese.L'attività di pianista e di etnomusicologo. La sua prima educazione avvenne in un ambiente familiare dominato dall'amore per la musica. Fu la madre a insegnargli i rudimenti del pianoforte; poi, nel 1893, B. intraprese a Bratislava, con L. Erkel, gli studi di composizione, che completò (1899-1903) all'Accademia musicale di Budapest. Negli anni successivi, mentre iniziava la sua intensa attività di pianista, cominciò a coltivare un appassionato interesse per il canto popolare ungherese e balcanico, dedicandosi con Kodály alla raccolta e allo studio dei suoi documenti. Insegnante di pianoforte, dal 1907, all'Accademia di Budapest, proseguì con grande successo la carriera concertistica in patria e all'estero, esibendosi spesso anche insieme alla moglie, pure pianista,...
