Borrow Confidence

For decades, a single message has dominated self-improvement: you must believe in yourself before you can act. But what if this advice is a psychological trap? This book begins with the story of basketball legend Bill Russell, a man who vomited from anxiety before games yet dominated the court, to dismantle the myth of pre-existing confidence. Author Daniel Stone traces the history of this flawed idea, from the well-meaning but failed California Task Force to Promote Self-Esteem in the 1980s to the modern obsession with "authenticity." The book reveals that the feeling of confidence is not the fuel for success, but the reward that comes after. Drawing on the work of psychologist William James, the neuroscience of myelination, and the "enclothed cognition" theory, Borrow Confidence provides a radical, evidence-based framework. It demonstrates how to use physical actions, specific behaviors, and even clothing to build the biological foundation of genuine certainty. Discover the practical science of acting "as if" and learn how to build the confidence you need by first borrowing it.
