The Borrowed Fist

The order was correct in every particular. That was how he knew it was murder. January 1882. A blizzard is closing the Denver & Rio Grande, and in the night office at Cinder Bend, Amos Wren copies down a train order that is perfect. Right form. Right procedure. Right signature. He stops halfway down the page. Six years on this wire have taught him forty men by the rhythm of their hands — the way another man knows a voice through a wall. A fist is the one mark a telegrapher makes that he cannot polish, disguise, or lend. And the hand sending this order does not belong to the man who signed it. The order puts a passenger special and a loaded coal drag into the same eleven miles of single track, inside a canyon with no siding and a curve where a headlight is invisible until it is four hundred yards away. Ninety people are asleep on one of those trains. Amos cannot send a warning. Every office on the division hangs on one wire, every wire crosses the desk of the man who forged the order, and his own ruined left hand makes his sending as recognizable as his face. He goes to his trainmaster with the only evidence he has, and watches it entered in a leather book as a question about his hearing. What he can send is himself. Eleven miles up a two percent grade in the dark on a section man's hand car, carrying two tin torpedoes and a red lantern — the last two things on the railroad that need no signature. There is one way out that would be faster, and cleaner, and would almost certainly work. He knows the forger's method. He could use it himself, tonight, and save every soul on that train before morning. The Borrowed Fist is about why he doesn't. A frontier thriller built out of the unglamorous machinery of a railroad — train orders and clearance cards, a clerk's arithmetic, a torpedo bent onto a railhead, a lamp burning red in a snowstorm — and one man who is very good at a very narrow thing on the worst night of his life. It is a story about the cost of being right without proof, and about what it takes to save ninety strangers and be filed as unreliable for it. Book Three of the Chuckwagon series. Completely standalone — it reads cold, and rewards anyone who has read the first two. No romance. No gunfight. Nobody dies on the page.
