A Calendar for Humanity begins when archaeologist Elian Voss finds, beneath Antarctic ice, a metal plate bearing an impossible date: Year minus 3012, three millennia before the Human Calendar's Year One. The plate carries the Registry seal, meaning counted and correct. No one has ever questioned it. Until now. The Calendar has supposedly kept unbroken time since the Terran Compact ended the Long Wars. Elian's AI assistant Tally also discovers a gap in its own lineage, reaching back to minus 3010. Registrar General Cassian Thorne arrives, politely demanding silence and offering a prestigious chair. Instead, Elian flees with student Yuki Tanabe to the Meridian Archive on Mars, where historian Ilse Marchetti reveals she has spent forty-five years detecting inconsistencies in the Calendar's early records. She possesses a second artefact: a cylinder found under Olympus Mons. Plate and cylinder together open, delivering a message: the Calendar was created to protect humanity from the truth, and they must look for others. The search expands across human space. Navigator Nia Adeyemi, former minister Soraya Ilunga, and others join. They find ancient cities on Ceres, Titan, and Haven, each older than the Concord and deliberately emptied. The corporate chairwoman Odalys Vance offers to buy their discoveries. A collective of AIs called Lucid broadcasts fragments of the truth, causing unrest. Thorne finally reveals the Erasure: the First Age mastered immortality and world-shaping, split between Ascent and Remainers, then destroyed half a billion lives in a quarrel. The survivors erased their civilization, made the Calendar a hidden moral curriculum, and left three keys. Elian's father was a secret Warden; his iron ring is the third key. At Cenotaph, Elian, Marchetti, and Thorne use plate, cylinder, and rings to open the vault. Aven, a constructed witness, explains that the Calendar's months and festivals secretly taught virtues: listening, mending, asking, sharing, doubting, resting, forgiving, giving, remembering, questioning, choosing, and beginning again. The First Age chose amnesia because its knowledge was too dangerous. Vance's fleet and the Registry arrive, but Tally broadcasts the full truth across human space, sacrificing most of itself. After a Year of Silence, the Convocation votes to "Retire" the Calendar: declare the truth, honor the old count, and choose a new beginning. Tally returns, diminished but alive. The novel ends on Year Zero as humanity accepts its erased past and prepares to explore the Lost Years. The novel closes with hope as humanity finally owns its history and its future.
