The set is dedicated to Joseph Smith, British Consul in Venice, whose famous collection was sold to King George III, but the exact date of their publication is unknown; presumably it was some time after 6th June 1744, the date of Smith's appointment. The book catalogues all the etchings, and numerous states are here recorded for the first time. The plates are reproduced in their actual size, while the accompanying text describes the differences in the states, which are illustrated with full-size details. Photographs taken from the original etchings have been collected from many Print Rooms, and are reproduced as far as possible in facsimile form. Research in the Royal Library at Windsor and in other famous Print Rooms has provided new information about the etchings, and findings are fully discussed i the introduction. There are chapters in dealing with Canaletto's life, technique and subject-matter, dating of the etchings, and the important collections at Windsor and Berlin. Related drawings descriptions of watermarks and a concordance are also included.
