The Contract

In the Terraces of Port Ambrose in 2038, everything has a price and almost nothing is insured. Marisol Vega and Desmond Okoro are a two-operator element working under the firm Redline Actual. They take contracts that others will not: recovery jobs, verification runs, and security work on disputed ground where coverage maps go blank. Their reputation rests on a single principle. They do exactly what the signed sentence says, no more and no less. A small job on the shore road leaves behind a sealed case that should not have existed. A stairwell defence turns into a questionnaire in live ammunition. A verification contract in the container yards reveals a carefully fabricated total loss. Each assignment has been shaped in advance. Someone is studying how they move, how they divide risk, and how far they will go to keep a contract intact. What begins as professional caution becomes the slow uncovering of a machine that has been running for nine years. Underwriters, loss adjusters, and the arbitration platform itself have been commissioning documented losses in order to cross a treaty trigger. The operators who generate those losses are both the product and the expendable margin. Marisol's own past report from Abidjan sits at the centre of the design. The firm that books their work has been pricing their deaths for years. As the pattern tightens, the couple must decide whether the only honest currency left on the coast is the written record. Filing becomes more dangerous than any physical contract. Statements, cross-references, and public dockets begin to move faster than bullets. Masks are struck, names are marked, and the arithmetic of survival is rewritten one sheet of paper at a time. *Hazard Pay: Book One – The Contract* is a near-future thriller about the cost of being exact in a world that profits from approximation. It follows two professionals whose entire working lives have been built on the integrity of a sentence, and asks what happens when that integrity is the one thing the system cannot absorb.
