THE DEVIL'S RANKING SYSTEM Climb — or Be Collected In the city of Vespertine, every soul is given a number. At the beginning of each month, the mysterious Door reveals a ranking that determines who is safe—and who is in danger. The nine people at the bottom of the list are summoned to the Old Minster, where they disappear during the terrifying Walk. No one knows exactly what happens to those who are collected. Everyone knows they never return. Nineteen-year-old Vesna, the daughter of a professional appraiser, has spent years secretly recording the rankings in a private copybook. She has always believed the numbers must measure something simple: wealth, usefulness, morality, or perhaps the favor of the mysterious power behind the Door. But when her father's ranking begins to fall despite his usefulness to the city, Vesna discovers something far more disturbing. The ranking does not appear to measure how good a person is—or how much they possess. It measures what is still owed to them. Every unpaid debt, every unreturned favor, every obligation left unresolved seems to have a place in the system. Gratitude can become a form of currency, while generosity can become a dangerous liability. In Vespertine, even kindness has a price. Then Vesna notices something impossible. Sorcha, a mysterious net-mender, has remained at the bottom of the ranking for years. She is known as the cheapest soul in the city, yet she has survived three Walkings. When Vesna confronts her, Sorcha reveals that survival may depend on becoming someone whom no one owes anything to. As Vesna's nine-year-old sister approaches the age when she will enter the ranking, the rules of Vespertine begin to look less like a system designed to judge human worth and more like a mechanism designed to control it. To protect her family, Vesna must uncover the truth behind the Door, the rankings, and the Devil who may have created them. Because in Vespertine, being good may not save you. Being valuable may not save you. And being owed may be the most dangerous thing of all.
