It is eight twenty. The shoes are by the door. He is six feet from them, you have asked four times, and the fourth time your voice did something you did not like. He is not refusing because he does not want to go. He wanted to go twenty minutes ago and said so. He is not refusing because he is spoiled, or because you have been too soft, which is what your mother thinks and what you are starting to think at eight twenty on a Tuesday. He is refusing because you asked. That is the whole thing, and once you genuinely understand it, most of this book follows on its own. The demand is the problem. Not the task. He would have done it if he had thought of it himself. He would do it now if a game required it. The instruction is what he cannot comply with, and the more calm and reasonable and patient the instruction, the more impossible it becomes. You have probably been given a great deal of advice that assumes the opposite. Be firmer. Be consistent. Follow through. Natural consequences. A sticker chart. You tried all of it, properly, for months. It made things worse. And then you were told it made things worse because you were not doing it properly. This book starts from the assumption that you were doing it properly and that it was the wrong tool. It is arranged as a single day, from waking to the hour after he is finally asleep, because that is how you live it. 6.50am Waking him, and the sentence that costs you the whole morning 7.20am Why he says no to the thing he asked for 8.05am The meltdown in the hallway, and why reasoning extends it 9am to 3pm "He is absolutely fine at school." Why that is true and is not reassurance 3.20pm The collapse at the gate, and the one question never to ask 4.30pm Homework, and why giving up on it is a legitimate strategy 10. 40pm The hour after he is asleep, which is about you Then the bigger picture: meltdown versus shutdown, the recovery debt, siblings, a partner who disagrees, "in my day", being told you are inconsistent, whether to chase a diagnosis, the professional who does not accept it, school refusal, aggression, lying, teenagers, and what actually happens to them. Honest about the science, which almost no book in this space is. PDA is not a formal diagnosis. It is not in the DSM or the ICD, and its status as a distinct syndrome is genuinely contested. This book says so at length, cites the founding papers and the critical literature, and then explains why an unresolved scientific question does not leave you stuck: the approaches work on the observable pattern, whatever is causing it. That honesty is also tactical. Walk into a school meeting saying "he has PDA" and you will lose the room. Walk in saying "direct instructions reliably produce escalation, indirect ones do not, and here are two weeks of data" and you will not. Includes a two-week demand audit, a page of phrase swaps for the fridge, and five things to do in the first week that cost nothing. Educational only. Not therapy, diagnosis, or medical advice. You are not inconsistent. You are responsive, which is harder, and almost nobody will say so.
