Through encounters with fellow reincarnated beings—Marcus Webb, a former spider learning to accept his instincts; Mr. Koi, a wise janitor carrying ancient knowledge; and Priya Rao, a hydrologist who literally works for a sentient river—Pawan gradually learns that freedom isn't found in bigger bowls or better schedules, but in letting go of waiting altogether. The novel blends noir detective fiction, magical realism, and Buddhist philosophy. Pawan's arc moves from obsession with past lives to present-moment acceptance. He learns that the "flakes" (grace, meaning, connection) fall whether we chase them or not. By the end, having stopped counting his lives and choosing to stay in the ordinary world with his found family, Pawan discovers that swimming—not waiting—is the whole point of existence.
