Historical Romances – Boxed Set surveys the long evolution of romance as a mode for imagining the past, from courtly intrigue and epistolary experiment to Gothic intensity, social satire, adventure, realism, and modern psychological nuance. Its selection ranges across national traditions and centuries, placing novels of revolution, inheritance, war, colonial encounter, and domestic constraint beside tales of mystery and passionate conflict. Sweeping historical panoramas, sharply observed manners, and emotionally charged narratives make the volume a remarkably varied archive of the genre. The contributors collectively map the development of the novel through Enlightenment moral inquiry, Romantic historicism, Victorian social criticism, transatlantic realism, and early twentieth-century reinvention. Women writers appear prominently alongside major British, French, Russian, American, and other international voices, making visible the genre's sustained engagement with gender, class, nation, and authority. These diverse literary inheritances enrich historical romance not merely as escapism, but as a means of interpreting social memory and contested identities. Recommended for students, scholars, and devoted general readers, this boxed set offers an unusually capacious introduction to historical romance's formal and cultural possibilities. Reading across its many perspectives invites comparison between styles, periods, and ethical concerns, while revealing an ongoing dialogue between private desire and public history.
