I End What Cannot Die is set in Vesper, a city trapped in the same afternoon for three hundred years, where nothing is permitted to truly end. Fires continue burning, the dead remain standing, marriages and other matters are indefinitely prolonged, and even the city's bells are designed never to complete their notes. Seventeen-year-old [protagonist], a gifted apprentice bell-founder, inherits a forbidden office known as the Curfew when his master, Tolm, chooses to end his own unnaturally prolonged life through an ancient rite called the Silent Toll. The rite passes an unfinished supernatural "stroke" into the witness's blood, giving the boy the ability to bring genuine endings to things that have been unnaturally continued. When he ends a three-year-old granary fire, he discovers that the city's system of eternal continuance is not merely bureaucratic—it is economically sustained by the stolen time of ordinary people. The Hourhouse collects the unused time of endings, while the powerful profit from keeping the city trapped in perpetual continuation. The boy's deepest struggle begins when he discovers that his own mother, who has stood among the city's preserved dead for eleven years, has had her remaining time confiscated. Unable to end her because she has been deprived of the very time required for an ending, he realizes that his mother is only one of many people being deliberately kept in this state. As he investigates the buried history of Vesper, he uncovers the truth behind the city's eternal afternoon: the Perpetual Court was built over the ancient Vesper Bell, whose final strike was interrupted three centuries earlier. The unfinished strike remains trapped in the blood of successive Curfew keepers, while the Court has built an entire civilization around preventing that final note from being completed. With the Court attempting to absorb or control his office, the young Curfewer must decide whether to remain inside the system or risk everything to give Vesper what it has been denied for three hundred years: an ending.
