PAWAN BHATIA, 2026

Author Pawan Bhatia is flagged by a government algorithm for using the word "gently" 412 times and for a satirical footnote about airport parking. While transiting through Heathrow, he is pursued by Agent Daniel Marsh, who has been briefed to monitor "institutional destabilization content." What begins as a tense chase through duty-free halls, perfume testers, and a rogue cleaning robot quickly becomes a comedic collision of bureaucracy and humor. Pawan carries his unpublished manuscript disguised in a biscuit bag. He loses a shoe mid-escape, declares "laughter" at customs, and is unknowingly aided by a network of sympathetic airport staff and his childhood friend Aanya Rathore, who orchestrates a satellite-assisted escape from Mumbai. Marsh catches up at the gate but finds himself laughing at Pawan's joke—a pivotal moment that shifts the story from pursuit to reluctant alliance. Pawan flies to New York, where he meets publisher Diane Whitfield, who recognizes the book's potential. He connects with customs officer Reyes, who unofficially clears him, and befriends retired air-traffic controller Corinne. In Washington, he meets Undersecretary Yolanda Pruitt, who admits the system has drifted from genuine threats to trivial monitoring. With help from retired agent Marcus Ellery and Aanya's tech wizardry (including a data-extraction device named Squeaky), Pawan obtains internal memos that reveal the absurdity of the flagging process. He presents these findings to the President, who laughs and supports the creation of a new Office of Gentle Oversight—tasked with reviewing flagged content for genuine satire before escalation. Marsh becomes its director, Reyes transfers in, and over six months, three outdated policies are quietly rewritten, including the parking-footnote rule. The book is published to acclaim, sparking book-club debates and even a television option. Pawan's translator grapples with the word "gently" in Portuguese, finding a phrase meaning "with the door left open." Meanwhile, Marcus publishes his memoir, featuring a chapter about a duck that was once monitored for "subversive metaphor density." The story concludes one year later at Heathrow, where the entire cast reunites over a shoe-shaped cake. Pawan begins drafting a sequel, reflecting that the chase was never about danger—it was about reminding institutions that they are made of people, and that laughter, not fear, is what truly crosses borders without a stamp. The book closes with a gentle landing: the system, though imperfect, has begun to remember its purpose.
