Alongside the Boy, he shares the heater with the "Trio": Dawn and Mavis, two old women who treat the end of the world like a disappointing trip to the shops, and Karen, a silent, sovereign presence whose commands even the engine obeys. Together, they face the Crossing—a bridge of bone where the ferryman demands a ticket Dave isn't sure he can afford to keep.
