The Ivory Shoulder Pelops is the beautiful seventeen-year-old son of Tantalus, a powerful king whose wealth and privilege come from an extraordinary friendship with the gods. But when Poseidon, god of the sea, sees Pelops and recognizes something in him, Tantalus becomes terrified that the gods will take his son away. Desperate to prevent Poseidon from claiming Pelops, Tantalus commits an unspeakable act: he sacrifices his own son and serves him at a feast for the gods. When the gods discover the crime, Pelops is restored to life by Rhea and the other immortals—but one of his shoulders is missing. In its place, the gods give him a shoulder of ivory, forever marking him as the mortal who was eaten and returned. After his resurrection, Pelops must learn to live with the trauma of what happened to him while becoming increasingly aware that the ivory shoulder connects him to the sea and to Poseidon. Unlike the other gods, Poseidon does not come to claim Pelops as a possession. Instead, he comes to him with empty hands, recognizing in Pelops the same experience of having been swallowed and returned. Their connection develops into a forbidden and deeply emotional bond between a mortal king and an immortal god. But Pelops's family, his inheritance, and the ancient curses surrounding the House of Tantalus draw him into a larger struggle involving power, betrayal, prophecy, bloodline, and the destructive consequences of divine desire. As Pelops moves between the mortal world and Poseidon's underwater realm, he must decide whether his extraordinary connection to the gods will define him—or whether he can reclaim his own identity and choose his own fate. The Ivory Shoulder is an LGBTQ+ retelling of the myth of Pelops and Tantalus, blending Greek mythology, fantasy, tragic romance, family betrayal, and the supernatural into a story about survival, identity, love, and the struggle to remain oneself after being treated as someone else's possession.
