Before Greece and Rome, the gods of Canaan, Anatolia, and Egypt were already at war. Volume 8 of Kratopatheia gathers twenty war decisions from three great mythic traditions of the ancient Near East: - Canaan (the Ugaritic texts): Baal's battles with Yam and Mot, Anat's fury, and the epics of Kirta and Aqhat. - The Hittites: the struggle for heavenly kingship, in which Kumarbi overthrows Anu and is overthrown by Teshub, the Song of Ullikummi, and the slaying of the serpent Illuyanka. - Egypt: Ra's nightly battle with Apep, the Destruction of Mankind, Isis stealing Ra's secret name, Set's murder of Osiris, and the long contest of Horus and Set. The volume closes with the capture of Joppa and the struggle for the armor of Inaros. Each chapter reads one decision as a psychological event. The emotions include appeasement and its cost, learned helplessness, the rage of grief, envy, Oedipal rivalry, revenge rumination, and the dehumanizing of the enemy. Across three civilizations the same human forces drive gods and kings to war. These myths shaped how the ancient world understood order, kingship, and justice. Kratopatheia is a series on the psychology of war decision-makers, from myth to history. It is written for readers of mythology, ancient history, psychology, and leadership.
