Lamia: Child-Devouring Nightmare

Legendary Archives Publishing, 2025

Her name once silenced crying children across the ancient world. "Hush," Greek mothers warned, "or Lamia will come for you." Once a beautiful queen of Libya loved by Zeus, Lamia lost her children to Hera's jealousy—and lost herself. Twisted into a sleepless, serpent-limbed predator who could lift the very eyes from her own head, she became ancient Greece's answer to the unbearable: the healthy child found dead in its cradle for no reason anyone could name. This study traces Lamia across three thousand years, from her contested Greek and Near Eastern origins through Roman, Byzantine, and medieval reinvention to Keats and her feminist reclamation by Angela Carter and others. Drawing on archaeology, etymology, and the idea of the "monstrous feminine," it asks why one figure has voiced our deepest fears about grief and maternal power for so long. Inside you'll find: Her place among Greece's female monsters—Empusa, Mormo, Gello—and her kin worldwide, from the Mesopotamian Lamashtu to the Japanese ubume How each era remade her to voice its own fears Why she still stalks us, from horror cinema to Slender Man What she reveals about grief, motherhood, and the fear of losing a child After millennia, Lamia still waits in the shadows. This is the book that follows her there.
