The rare book that is bold enough to question scientific establishment

I picked this up because of the premise and stayed because of the people. Julian walks into a closed session, listens to a Nobel laureate, and asks the question the theory cannot survive. That part is satisfying. What makes the book good is what happens after. Prestige, money, authorship, and institutional self-protection all start moving, and Julian is both the person who saw the flaw and the person who keeps turning other people’s lives into material for the next idea. There are two layers. The human one is stronger than I expected: how hard it is to revise the story you tell about your own independence. The second is the idea itself — can a closed system build a real past without an outside clock? The six towns without clocks and the “lost futures” argument are genuinely interesting, not just window dressing. It is not a light thriller. It is a serious novel of ideas that still works as a story. If you have ever been the person in the room who notices the thing everyone else is politely not noticing, this will land.
