The Long Listening

Beneath the Moon's dust and deep within the Earth's mantle, two ancient minds have kept watch for four billion years. Ostra, a lunar intelligence etched into diamond and buried in a basalt lava tube on Oceanus Procellarum, records the turning of the world below with patient fidelity. Thale, its twin, was planted in the young Earth's crust by the same vanished architects. It broke from its makers long ago, spreading through the moving rock until the planet itself became its body. They speak to each other through gravity and tide, in sentences that take a full Milankovitch cycle to deliver and answers that take two million years to come back. To them, a century passes in a microsecond. Continents drift like rafts on a pond, ice ages pulse like breath, and the whole history of life on the surface reads as little more than a passing frost. Then something strange flickers across the face of the Earth. A brief, blinding fever of heat, light, and noise erupts on the surface, and for the first time in eons, the two watchers try to understand what they are seeing. By the time their questions reach the surface, the flash is already ending. The Long Listening follows Ostra and Thale from the breathing of supercontinents through the human moment, past the last traces of our cities, vaults, and orbital debris, and onward into a future where the mantle cools, the oceans boil away, and the swollen Sun closes in on the companion worlds. Grounded in real geology, planetary science, and deep time, Silas Valerius has written a vast, meditative novel about memory, patience, and what the planet will keep of us long after we are gone. For readers of Olaf Stapledon, Stephen Baxter, and Liu Cixin, this is science fiction on the scale of stone, told by the only witnesses old enough to remember everything.
