The Lost Letters

di Ricardo Gómez (Autore)

Kalimera Books, 2026

Budapest, January 1941. Ana Marta has one hour to pack twenty kilos for a nine-year-old boy who does not know he is saying goodbye to everything he has ever known. Her ex-husband Esteban has the travel papers, the contacts in Bogotá, and the custody documents signed by a judge she never met. He has all the reasons. She has Tomás. What follows is not one story but many: a family scattered by war and distance and silence, reassembled across eight decades through the letters they wrote and the ones they never sent. Tomás grows up in Colombia not quite Hungarian, not quite Colombian, carrying his mother's language inside him like a stone. His children know only part of the story. His grandchildren begin to find the rest. The Lost Letters spans 1941 to 2023, from the frost-locked streets of Budapest to the Bogotá savanna, from wartime Marseille to postwar Toronto, from the archives of the Budapest Jewish community to a family meeting in a house that no longer belongs to anyone. Eleven narrators take turns — Ana Marta, Esteban, young Tomás, adult Tomás, his children, his grandchildren, a friend, a historian, a grandson named Felipe who is ten years old and understands more than anyone gives him credit for. Each voice adds what the previous one could not see or would not say. This is a novel about what families pass down and what they bury. About the shape of silence and the weight of what is never explained. About a boy who grows up to be an engineer and applies the logic of structures to everything except his own history — until his history finds him anyway.
