Medieval Finland Under Swedish Rule: The Making of a Nation on Europe's Northern Frontier, 1150–1523

Between two Christendoms lay a land that neither could quite hold. For nearly four hundred years, the land we now call Finland lay between rival powers. To the west stood Sweden, the Latin Church, and the wealth of the Baltic trade; to the east, Orthodox Novgorod and the forests of the Rus. Between them was a scattered, pagan people whose country became a prize, a border, and at last a possession. Medieval Finland Under Swedish Rule tells that overlooked story, from the first crusades of the twelfth century to the eve of the Reformation: the campaigns that were half conquest and half migration, the grey stone castles raised to hold the land, the treaty of 1323 that drew a line straight through the wilderness, and the farmers who paid for all of it. Sweden did not so much conquer Finland as absorb it, and that quiet difference shaped the nation that emerged. Drawing on the Swedish and Finnish sources, this is accessible narrative history of a country's beginnings, told across the centuries almost no one remembers.
