They have done a thousand of these. You have done four. There is a meeting on the fourteenth. There is a draft document you do not fully understand. There is a child who is not doing well. And there is a table of people who are mostly pleasant, mostly well-intentioned, and entirely unable to give you what you do not ask for correctly, in writing, on the record. In 2021, researchers writing in Exceptional Children gave the thing a name: the advocacy expectation. Parents perceive, accurately, that their child receives appropriate services only if the parent pushes for them. Which means the child whose parent cannot take the time off work, or does not know the vocabulary, receives less. This is a field reference, not a book to read straight through. Six short orientation entries at the front, worth twenty minutes tonight. Then fifty situational entries, each answering one question in two or three pages, each in the same shape: what is happening, what the rule actually is, what to say, what to get in writing, and what to do if they refuse. Most of the people at that table chose this work and are constrained by budgets and caseloads they did not set, and treating them as adversaries produces worse outcomes for your child. Every entry is written to get the thing while keeping the relationship you will need for the next nine years. Not legal advice, and it says so plainly: law changes, state rules vary, and where the stakes are high you should get an advocate or an attorney. Legal citations are given in standard form. The research is verified against the original journal record and listed in full at the back. The parents who get outcomes are almost never the ones who were loudest in the room. They are the ones whose paperwork was better.
