The sanctuary had collapsed in stages, as if it had tried many times to remain holy and failed each time a little more. Its outer dome lay split like a skull, ribs of white stone exposed to sun and wind. Moss threaded the fractures. Birds nested where incense once rose. Pilgrims no longer came, because the road that led here had been erased, not by time, but by decree. Maps ended before the hill. Stories ended before the name. No one remembered what the sanctuary had been called. That forgetting was not an accident. Deep beneath the ruin, below the cracked altar and the hollow cistern, a chamber remained intact. It was not protected by locks or seals, but by something older and more patient: refusal. Those who descended without need felt their purpose dissolve. Those who came seeking power found their steps heavy, their breath shallow, their thoughts unthreading. Only the merciful reached the bottom, and even they did not know why they were allowed to arrive. In the chamber lay a book. Not a book bound in gold or guarded by flame, but a plain codex wrapped in layered cloth, each layer stitched by a different hand, in a different century. The cloth bore stains of water, ash, and blood. The pages within were mismatched: papyrus beside vellum, bark-paper beside pressed linen. Ink colors shifted from page to page. Languages changed mid-sentence. Yet every author had written toward the same silence. Not a word. A Name. The prophets who wrote it had never met. Some were kings. Some were exiles. One had been illiterate and dictated his passage to a child. Another wrote while awaiting execution. None claimed ownership. None signed their work. Each insisted, in their own way, on the same warning: The Name cannot be spoken by those who wish to use it. Above ground, armies gathered.
