The Message That Came Back: A First Contact Science Fiction Mystery

I hope whoever finds this is not lonely where they are. Bridget Nowak was six years old when she said it. Eleven words, into a microphone, in a school corridor in Pomona in April of 1977. She forgot she had ever done it. Fifty years later the spacecraft comes back. It has been taken apart and rebuilt by something nobody can identify, out of a material that cannot be cut, burned, dissolved, or measured. Its mass is identical to the gram. Our physics has been corrected in forty-one places, politely, each correction pitched at exactly the level of the page it corrects. And where the original record sat, there is a new one. It runs ninety seconds. It is addressed to a six-year-old girl from Pomona, California. I was. I am not now. And then, at the end, three seconds of empty groove and two more words: Were you? Bridget is fifty-seven, widowed, running a farm supply store in a Montana town of four hundred and ten people. She has freight coming Thursday and a sign on the south face that has been knocking since April. Seven hundred miles south, in a clean room in Colorado, seventeen of the most careful people in the United States are drafting humanity's reply, and they have until the thirty-first of October, because the thing on the cradle has told them when it will transmit and there is nothing anyone can do to stop it. They are writing a beautiful page. Every fact in it is true. There is not one person anywhere in it. Bridget is the only one who has worked out the rule, and she worked it out the way she reads a letter from an insurer across a counter: it answers what it is given, and nothing else, ever. Which means the page in that folder is not a message being sent. It is a mirror being held up. Whatever is in it comes back. Whatever is not in it is gone. Nobody with authority will listen to her. And then she does the one thing that makes certain nobody can. A first contact novel about measurement, grief, and the distance between a true account and a defensible one.
