A Murder of Detectives

Harper, 2027

A grieving widow nearing the end of her life assembles six detectives—some professional, some amateur—to solve a fourteen-year-old cold case involving the disappearance and death of her daughter, with a sizable inheritance as the reward. Fourteen years ago, the small, sleepy seaside village of Combe Wyndam was rocked by an unspeakable tragedy. It was an ordinary day like any other when Clare Dunsmuir, a local teenage girl, seemingly vanished from her backyard, never to be seen or heard from again. That is . . . until Clare’s dead body is found in the exact same spot where she disappeared fourteen years ago. Clare’s ailing mother, nearing the end of her life and newly ravaged by longstanding grief, takes an unconventional approach to finding the truth. In a last-ditch attempt to get answers she invites six detectives to compete to solve the crime, with the reward being a large cash prize: her estate worth nearly a half million pounds. Matthew Fallow—one of the six—is no real detective, just a podcaster who stumbled into fame after uncovering his own father’s murder. Broke and aimless, he accepts the grieving mother’s bizarre offer to solve the impossible murder alongside five rival investigators—some seasoned professionals, some amateurs like himself, including the original police officer assigned to the case, an ex-military intelligence officer, a YouTube true-crime star, and a top investigator in London. When one of their flock vanishes overnight, Matt must decide which of his fellow detectives he can trust, and who might be a suspect . . . A Murder of Detectives is an engrossing thriller full of unforgettable characters and shocking twists that will keep you guessing—alongside the talented cast of detectives— until the very last page.
