Sixty-two percent of the firefighters who will come when your house burns are not paid to come. In 1983 the United States had about 884,600 volunteer firefighters. Today it has roughly 635,100 — a quarter fewer people, covering a population that has grown by forty percent, answering three times as many emergency calls. In communities of 2,500 residents or fewer, a third of the volunteer fire service is now over fifty years old. In March 2026 the town of Wallace, North Carolina temporarily disbanded its fire department. Nothing had burned down. Nobody had died. The chief retired, several volunteers resigned the same night, and there were not enough people left to answer the next call. Drawing on government statistics, national fire service surveys, and the experience of countries meeting the same arithmetic sooner — Japan's shobodan, Austria's remarkable exception — this book maps what that donated labour is actually worth, what it would cost to replace, and what a community loses in the years before anyone notices it is gone. It ends with the only question that matters: what do we ask of people now, and how do we ask it so that someone still says yes.
