What if becoming a better learner is not only about working harder—but also about knowing when to let go? Students are often taught to set goals, follow effective study strategies, persist through difficulty and build confidence. These are important skills. But goals can become rigid, familiar strategies can stop working, a disappointing result can become part of our identity, and confidence can make us defend an answer even when the evidence has changed. Non-Attached Self-Regulated Learning introduces NA-SRL, a practical, research-informed approach to learning with commitment without becoming trapped by the very goals, strategies, answers, results and self-beliefs that are meant to help us succeed. At the heart of the book is a simple five-move pathway: SEE ? QUESTION ? RELEASE ? ADAPT ? GO BEYOND Readers learn to see what is actually happening in their learning, question assumptions that have become fixed, release approaches that no longer help, adapt courageously in response to evidence, and continue learning beyond their present understanding. Through relatable learner stories, colourful diagrams, practical activities and insights from research on self-regulated learning, self-directed learning, metacognition, nonattachment, adaptive expertise and intellectual humility, the book shows readers how to: distinguish real learning from the feeling of familiarity; use grades and feedback as information rather than identity; recognise when persistence has become stubbornness; change strategies when evidence shows they are no longer effective; pursue ambitious goals without allowing them to define self-worth; become more comfortable with uncertainty, mistakes and asking for help; revise beliefs and explanations when stronger evidence appears; and learn, unlearn and relearn as circumstances change. Designed for secondary and university students, adult and professional learners, educators and parents, the book can be read from beginning to end or used as a practical toolkit whenever learning becomes stuck. This is not a book about caring less. It is about working deeply while holding lightly. Set goals—but remain willing to revise them. Choose strategies—but judge them by evidence. Use results—but do not become the result. Build confidence—but never let identity stop you from learning. The aim is not to become the perfect learner. It is to become a learner who can keep learning.
