Romain Rolland's *Pierre & Luce* is a compact, lyrical novella set in Paris during the final year of the First World War. It follows Pierre, a politically disillusioned young man, and Luce, an artistic and spiritually generous woman, whose unexpected love briefly creates a private refuge from militarism, grief, and social division. Rolland's spare narrative, luminous imagery, and recurring contrasts between spring, music, and wartime destruction give the work the quality of a modern pastoral elegy. The lovers' fragile happiness, culminating in the tragic Good Friday bombardment, transforms a seemingly intimate romance into a powerful indictment of collective violence. Its emotional directness places it within the humanist and pacifist currents of early twentieth-century European literature. Rolland wrote the novella in the shadow of the Great War, a catastrophe he opposed with exceptional moral independence. Already renowned for the monumental novel-cycle *Jean-Christophe* and awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1915, he had publicly defended international understanding in essays later collected as *Above the Battle*. His sympathy for ordinary civilians, artists, and conscientious dissenters informs every page of *Pierre & Luce*, while his faith in love and cultural fellowship supplies its restrained but unmistakable ethical vision. This brief yet resonant book is especially recommended to readers interested in war literature, pacifist thought, and the relationship between private feeling and public catastrophe. Its accessible prose conceals considerable historical and formal depth, making it valuable both as an affecting love story and as a principled intervention in debates about nationalism, violence, and human solidarity. This enriched edition has been carefully crafted to add value to your reading experience. - A succinct Introduction situates the work's timeless appeal and themes.
