Descrizione

This book is unique in its specific subject matter aimed at veterinary professionals - previously, information for pregnant veterinarians was scattered across the internet. It reviews, summarizes and analyzes data that is otherwise only available in scientific studies or in textbooks that cover the topic more generally, or on internet blogs or websites. The book also fits in with the general category of books that are written to help support and encourage veterinary professionals in their physical and mental wellbeing, a 'hot' topic given that veterinary medicine is facing a crisis as one of the occupations with the highest rates of suicide as well as a nationwide worker shortage. This book informs workplace policies to improve worker safety, wellbeing, and job satisfaction Written in a warm, accessible style, each chapter includes at least one personal account from a veterinary professional detailing their experiences with the respective topic during their pregnancy or postpartum period to provide insight and encouragement. Some of these accounts are from leaders and well-known individuals in veterinary medicine, including Justine Lee of VetGirl, Stacey Cordivano of The Whole Veterinarian podcast, and Marie Holowaychuk of Reviving Vet Med. Given that women now account for almost 60% of practicing vets registered with the RCVS in the UK, and 62.9% of all US veterinarians are women, pregnancy in the workplace is common and comes with unique challenges for vets. The author is careful to use terminology that is not exclusive to the US and adds information relevant to the UK and Europe to ensure global appeal. The book provides a comprehensive, evidence-based, unbiased perspective. It meets an important need to provide information to the veterinary parents, supporting teams, and to leaders/professional organizations to create a culture that supports women as working mothers. There is a need for community, for equity, and for holistic health support for veterinary health professionals and this is one more effort that contributes to these shifts being more likely. Gender-inclusive language is used throughout, acknowledging that not all mothers and pregnant people identify as women.
