Proof of the Pudding

di Robert Sheckley (Autore)

Scott Miller, 2024

After a global war leaves Earth scorched and silent, one man returns from hiding on the far side of the Moon—only to find himself the planet’s final survivor. Wandering through ruins drenched in radiation and ash, he discovers a strange new ability: the power to create matter from thought alone. Food, structures, tools, even entire cities blossom beneath his fingertips. But the more he creates, the more he feels the crushing burden of being the last human being alive. His solitude finally shatters when a mysterious young woman appears in the doorway of his cave. She knows him. She remembers the war. She is warm, witty, alive—and entirely impossible. As the two navigate hope, longing, suspicion, and uncertainty, the survivor must face the ultimate test of his sanity: can he trust her existence, or has his lonely mind conjured a perfect companion to save itself? Robert Sheckley, one of the sharpest voices of mid-century speculative fiction, built a career blending razor-edge wit with philosophical questions about identity, society, and human nature. His stories frequently combine humor with unsettling, thought-provoking twists that linger long after the last page. A prolific contributor to Galaxy, IF, and Fantasy & Science Fiction, Sheckley became known for his inventive premises and sly social commentary. Many of his works were adapted for television, radio, and film—including the iconic “Seventh Victim,” which inspired the cult classic The Tenth Victim. His influence continues to ripple through modern sci-fi, shaping generations of writers with his clever, unpredictable storytelling.
