A Rebels' War assembles forty-seven personal accounts of the Confederacy, placing battlefield recollection beside diary, memoir, political testimony, naval narrative, and reflections on civilian life. Its varied prose ranges from formal military reportage to intimate domestic observation, revealing how war was experienced, remembered, and subsequently narrated by Confederate participants. Campaign accounts, prison and espionage episodes, and striking records of the home front together illuminate both the immediacy of conflict and the retrospective shaping of Confederate memory. The contributors include soldiers, commanders, public officials, sailors, journalists, women diarists, and civilians whose positions within Confederate society differed sharply. Their writings emerge from the military crisis of secession and the Civil War, but also from the postwar culture of commemoration in which many former Confederates explained defeat, sacrifice, emancipation, and social upheaval through partisan frameworks. Read collectively, these voices document the breadth of Confederate experience while inviting critical attention to the racial politics, silences, and Lost Cause-inflected assumptions that often structure such testimony. This volume is especially valuable for readers seeking a capacious primary-source encounter with the Confederacy. Its many styles and perspectives encourage comparison between public rhetoric and private feeling, military ambition and civilian endurance, memory and historical evidence. Students and general readers alike will find it a rich basis for examining how individuals made meaning from a war that transformed the United States.
