Red Flag

Sigrid Halvorsen has spent eleven seasons jumping fire. She's exact, load-bearing, the one crews want on the line when a fire stops behaving — which is exactly why it's a problem when her calls stop sounding like fire sense. Her grandmother Astrid raised her on the old stories from the country Astrid left as a girl: a wolf that gets loose before the end, a sun it swallows, a flood that comes for ground that should be dry, three winters with no summer between them, and a last battle on the plain that nothing walks away from whole. Astrid isn't just telling stories anymore. She's losing everything else — names, faces, the year, her own son's death — but the cycle comes out of her whole and in order, like it's the last load-bearing wall left standing in a house coming down around it. Then the season starts matching it. A fire gets loose exactly where Sig said it would, four minutes before the official read caught it. A smoke inversion blacks out the sky at midday for a week. A flood takes a burn scar nobody flagged, on Sig's timeline instead of the National Weather Service's. Every one of it is explicable — inversion layers, fuel moisture, a sharper read on the same instruments everyone else has. Every one of it is also, in order, exactly what Astrid said would come next. Sig's base manager files it as a woman coming apart under a brutal season and starts building a case to pull her off the line. The base's fire behavior analyst starts running her models against Sig's tally instead of against the forecast. And Sig keeps a private count the way she was trained to track spot weather — not because she's sure what it means, but because so far it has never once been wrong. There's one sign left. Sig has never told anyone its name, because she doesn't want it to be true, and because the whole crew she loves — her jump partner, a rookie she's responsible for, the old-timer who's been quietly keeping his own tally for fifteen years — is about to walk into exactly the kind of fire it describes. Some doors only open the same direction once. Sig is about to find out whether it's her turn to walk through it, or her turn to hold it shut.
