Negli ultimi anni, in campo internazionale, è emersa l'esigenza di esplicitare le basi scientifiche del lavoro sociale. Da qui il successo, dentro le professioni sociali, di movimenti quali quello dell'evidence based social work che sostengono la necessità di fondare le scelte di intervento degli operatori sugli esiti della miglior ricerca empirica disponibile. Il testo raccoglie la sfida relativa allo sviluppo di una specifica area di ricerca connessa al lavoro sociale in una dimensione europea ed internazionale e rappresenta un tentativo di mettere in connessione studi a livello europeo ed extra-europeo in relazione alle principali questioni critiche affrontate dal servizio sociale.
