Formerly Known as Multiple Personality Disorder: Dissociative identity disorder was previously referred to as multiple personality disorder. The name change reflects a better understanding of the condition and a shift in how it is conceptualized. Altered State of Consciousness: DID involves the presence of two or more distinct personality states or identities within an individual.
