There Bob Moses led SNCC voter registration efforts powered by local activists, Black preachers and store owners, and sharecroppers such as Fannie Lou Hamer, buttressed by more than a thousand Northern college students. Despite arrests and beatings by local police and Klan members, movement workers chipped away at the entrenched system that denied the vote to Black Mississippians. With the presidential election on the horizon, Moses and his colleagues then decided to put forward an integrated delegation as a challenge to the state’s all-white panel at the upcoming Democratic National Convention. Lyndon Johnson arrived in Atlantic City prepared to accept the nomination and cruise to victory in the fall over Barry Goldwater. But the Mississippi challenge, despite its clear merits, sparked Johnson’s fears of a divided convention and electoral fallout in the solid South. On the verge of withdrawing from the nomination, Johnson responded with a ruthless power play that mobilized his allies in the party, organized labor, and the FBI to defeat the insurgents.
