On the night of 31 August 1986, the Admiral Nakhimov was crossing the Black Sea on a routine passage from Novorossiysk when a cargo ship tore into her side. She sank in minutes. But the Nakhimov wasn't always the Nakhimov. She began her life in 1925 as the SS Berlin, a passenger liner built for the Atlantic crossing. The Nazis requisitioned her for Hitler's "Strength Through Joy" tourism program, then sent her to war as a hospital ship on the Eastern Front. In the last chaotic weeks of the Third Reich, she took part in the mass evacuation of Operation Hannibal — and was sunk by a mine before the war even ended. The Soviets raised her from the seabed and rebuilt her from the keel up: new name, new flag, new purpose. As the Admiral Nakhimov, she carried a generation of Soviet citizens on Black Sea holidays — and, according to some accounts, smuggled troops to Cuba during the 1962 missile crisis, at the edge of nuclear war. She had already survived a world war, a sinking, and a Cold War in secret. She would not survive a summer night in 1986.
