Scrittore e drammaturgo francese. Riconosciuto maestro del romanzo storico e del teatro romantico, fu uno dei più prolifici e popolari scrittori francesi del diciannovesimo secolo. Figlio di Thomas-Alexandre Davy de La Pailleterie, soldato semplice figlio di un marchese, e di una schiava nera di Santo Domingo, Marie Cessette Dumas, dalla quale eredita il cognome. Alcuni anni dopo la morte del padre, nel 1823 il giovane Alexandre fu inviato a Parigi per intraprendere gli studi di legge. Nella capitale riuscì a ottenere, grazie alla sua buona calligrafia, diversi incarichi presso il Duca d'Orléans, il futuro re Luigi Filippo. Ebbe un figlio da una vicina di pianerottolo. Il figlio, anch'egli chiamato Alexandre Dumas, seguì le orme paterne e fu anch'egli scrittore...
